How do I count the mega bytes I'm using when surfing the net?

I have a credit of 500 MB to use. How long can I surf the net using this credit? I don't use the internet very often. I wonder if it's enough for one month use. How long does it take when, for example, I chat online with a friend?How do I count the mega bytes I'm using when surfing the net?
If you have WinXP, go to the network icon (near the clock) and double click on it. It will list how many packets were sent/received. Chatting will take very little. 500MB should be more then sufficient so long as you are not downloading a lot, or visiting sites with lots of pictures/movies.

If you use Firefox, you can use an add-on called Firefox Throttle 1.1.3. ';Firefox Throttle is a small extension that allows you to cap download/upload rates and monitor current bandwidth utilization.';

More addons to try are listed below.

Flashblock that will block flash items from loading. (Youtube) In it's place, will be an arrow. You can click that arrow to load the video. You can also use the add-on Adblock Plus, which will block many ads. This should limit the amount of data downloaded, and speed up page loads.
