How do i set a background on a linux net book?

i have recently been given an asus net book that runs on a linux system, i can't seem to figure out how i can change my background. Is it even possible to set backgrounds on a linux operated system? could somebody please help me, it would be muchly appreciated thanks in advance!How do i set a background on a linux net book?
Go to the fun %26amp; games tab (the name varies, it's Play on my Elonex) and open the photo viewer. Select and load the picture you want, right click and one of the options is ';Set as wallpaper';How do i set a background on a linux net book?
When i clicked on set as wallpaper it said could not find the prohgram set

on mine -

-click system on desktop, then preferences, then appearance, then backgrounds, then select which one you want. May be limited for notebook.
